My children and I were enjoying an unseasonably warm winter’s day by walking around the neighborhood. We suddenly saw a large dog running toward us–the kind that admittedly, I’m afraid of. Its owner was nowhere to be seen. As calmly as I could, I told my kids, “Follow close behind me.” It took all the restraint I could muster to keep a slow, steady pace. When I thought there was enough distance between us and the dog, I began to run. I arrived home and for the first time, looked back. I expected to see my kids. I didn’t. Unbeknownst to me, they chose to walk–with the dog right by their side.

After a while, we figured out who the owner was and were able to laugh at the incident. For days my kids liked to tease me by saying, “Mom doesn’t love us! She took off running when she was afraid!”

It’s true that we judge someone’s love for us–or lack of love–by what they do (or don’t do), isn’t it? Someone could say all the right things, but if their behavior doesn’t live up to their claims, their words fall on deaf ears and we resort to the cliche, “Actions speak louder than words.”

With that in mind, Christ’s actions didn’t just speak, they shouted! He told His disciples He loved them. But more importantly, He showed them He loved them. His act of love, as demonstrated on the cross, shouted–and continues to shout–“I love you” to the world. And to you and me

His words and His life proclaimed His love. As did His death.

Because of this, you can know beyond a shadow of a doubt that you are deeply loved, even if your emotions or circumstances say otherwise. Even if people say otherwise. The question isn’t if you’re loved by God, but whether you believe you’re loved by God.

We can be confident and secure in His love. Here’s just a few of the reasons why. Will you believe His Word to be true for you? Consider with me:

God’s love for me is unconditional - But God shows His love for us in that while we were still sinners, Christ died for us. (Romans 5:8)

God’s love for me is unfailing - Though the mountains be shaken and the hills be removed, yet my unfailing love for you will not be shaken. (Isaiah 54:10)

God’s love for me is unending - Give thanks to the God of heaven. His love endures forever. (Psalm 136:26)

God’s love for me is unchanging - For I am convinced that neither death nor life…nor anything else in all creation, will be able to separate us from the love of God that is in Christ Jesus our Lord. (Romans 8:38-39)

No wonder the apostle Paul prayed for the Ephesians to grasp the extent of God’s love. It truly is life changing: “And I pray that you, being rooted and established in love, may have power…to grasp how wide and long and high and deep is the love of Christ, and to know this love that surpasses knowledge” (Ephesians 3:17-19).

As we see the commercialization of love on full display this month, let’s continually bring it back to this prayer–for ourselves, our families, and our friends.

And whether you want to grow more deeply in the knowledge of God’s love for you, your love for Him, or the relationships He’s brought into your life, we’ve compiled some of our favorite resources for you to listen to or read throughout this month, and beyond. With much love in Christ,

Cara Blondo
