True Freedom
Hi ladies,
As we celebrate and praise God for the 250th anniversary of our nation’s independence, I’d like to share a few thoughts regarding our freedom.
Just as a sailboat can sail effortlessly through the ocean because its mast, sails, and rigging are connected and working together, our freedom is found only when we remain connected to the Lord. If a sailor cuts the lines that hold the sails in place, the boat can no longer sail as intended. Similarly, if we sever our relationship with Christ, we may think we’ve found freedom, but we’ve actually become slaves to ourselves–our wants, our desires, and our needs. Freedom, as God intended, is found in being–and remaining–attached to the Lord.
As we celebrate America’s 250th birthday during this amazing moment in history, may we never forget the freedom we have in Christ as we live in allegiance to Him.
When we consider this nation’s godly roots and the reasons many came to America, we remember how far we’ve strayed. For example, Harvard, Yale, Princeton, and Dartmouth were all founded by godly Christian men for the purpose of training other men for ministry.
Paul wrote to the Galatians, “Stand fast therefore in the liberty by which Christ has made us free, and do not be entangled again with a yoke of bondage…You ran well. Who hindered you from obeying the truth?” (Galatians 5:1, 7).
Abraham Lincoln said, “We have been the recipients of the choicest bounties of Heaven. We have been preserved, these many years, in peace and prosperity. We have grown in numbers, wealth, and power, as no other nation has ever grown. But we have forgotten God. We have forgotten the gracious hand which preserved us in peace, and multiplied and enriched and strengthened us; and we have vainly imagined, in the deceitfulness of our hearts, that all these blessings were produced by some superior wisdom and virtue of our own. Intoxicated with unbroken success, we have become too self-sufficient to feel the necessity of redeeming and preserving grace, too proud to pray to the God that made us. It behooves us then to humble ourselves before the offended Power, to confess our national sins, and to pray for clemency and forgiveness.”
Peter Marshall, who served as the Senate chaplain, said, “The choice before us is plain: Christ or chaos, conviction or compromise, discipline or disintegration. I am rather tired of hearing about our rights and privileges as American citizens. The time has come–it is now–when we ought to hear about the duties and responsibilities of our citizenship. America's future depends upon her accepting and demonstrating God's government.”
May we always remember our allegiance to God and His Word. As Abraham Lincoln said, “A Bible-reading people will never be enslaved.” May God once again send revival in these last days, because we know that the time is short. As it’s been said, all that is necessary for evil to thrive is for good men to do nothing. May we faithfully pass on the godly legacy of our nation’s history to our children, even as it is being removed from public school textbooks. The next generation’s knowledge of God depends upon the survival of America.
Happy 250th!
We would see Jesus,
Karen Pulley
